birds per hour is an indie rock band from Chicago. 

John and Shannon were the founding members of Greenlight, a melodic art-punk band from Chicago. Greenlight was active from 2003-2007, releasing an ep "Is This What I Am Here For?" in 2005. After playing Chicago clubs for a few years, Greenlight stopped playing in early 2007. 

After taking some time off, John and Shannon decided to start playing music again and recorded four songs in their basement with the original drummer from Greenlight, and another friend. "Covers" was completed in 2009, but the songs were only released on Myspace and Facebook for streaming. "Covers" was officially released in early 2023. 

Shannon started writing songs again in 2020, and by 2023, John and Shannon recruited their daughter, Kenzie, to play drums for new material they had been working on.
